Counselors, when counseling, need to apply various counseling techniques suitable for the client's characteristics. There are nine representative counseling conversation techniques, and they are as follows.
First, Structuring. Structuring is where the counselor defines the constraints and objectives of the counseling, which helps to structure the counseling scene and set the basic direction.
Second, Acceptance. This involves respecting the client as they are, actively listening to the client's statements, or matching their pace.
Third, Reflection. This technique involves the counselor elaborating on the emotions, thoughts, and attitudes expressed by the client's words and actions in different, fresh words. This helps the client perceive that they are understood by the counselor.
Fourth, Restatement. The counselor repeats part of what the client says, thus focusing the direction of the counseling. Through restatement, the counselor returns the content contained in the client's message.
Fifth, Summarization. The counselor summarizes what the client has said in different words, thus returning the key contents of the client's expression.
